AUTO OF FAITH

I believe in the yellow man,
in the promise of his rice,
in his bamboo traps
to hunt cunning invaders.

I believe in the sweat of the countryman,
in the smoke of his pipe,
in the fierce strike of his axe
and in his daily wander through the roads.

I believe in the cured mesh
of the fisherman,
in his timeless canoe,
in his moral sense sold to the sea
and in his consistent
bowl of fish.

Moreover I believe in his humility
and in his persistence for
a revolutionary dawn.

MI AMÉRICA… NO ES AMERICA

A Veronique Albanesse

o vomito amarillo.

La estatua de la libertad
quiere arrojar su antorcha
al Atlántico y marcharse
de nuevo a Francia, en un barco
camaronero de Onassis.

Los musulmanes negros
han formado un nuevo klan
para devorar niños blancos y palomas.

Los perros cebados de Birmingham
tienen hidrofobia,
y la llama eterna de Arlington,
consumirá las bestias de Texas.

La justicia está inclinada
al lado de Hoffa,
Campbells, además de tomates,
enlatará napalm, y Cosa Nostra
resucitará a Scar Face.

En verdad os digo:
Nada se mueve
sin la voluntad de Wall Street.

MY AMÉRICA… IS NOT AMERICA

To Veronique Albanesse
Los Angeles, November 1962.

The soul of America
is a giant hot dog with mustard
and a frozen king size coke.

The stars and stripes
beyond Alcatraz, are of
an intensely dead color.

The imperial eagle of old talons,
with worn out beak
is ill of Newcastle beers
in its yellow vomit.

The statue of liberty
wants to throw her torch
into the Atlantic and
go back to France, in one
of Onassis´ shrimp boats.

The black Muslims
have formed a new klan
to devour white children and doves.

The blood thirsty dogs
of Birmingham have rabies,
and the eternal flame of Arlington,
will consume the beasts of Texas.

Justice is bent
to the side of Hoffa,
besides tomatoes, Campbells
will can napalm, and the Cosa Nostra
will resurrect Scar Face.

In truth I tell you:
Nothing moves
without the will of Wall Street.

OFFSPRING

from dust
from torrid ashes
from the rotten bones of time
from the flesh that melts all eaten up
from the poisons of the earth
from those verses that God
shred to pieces
from there I come

ABOLENGO

del polvo
de las cenizas turbias
de los huesos roídos por el tiempo
de la carne que se deslíe mordida
por los venenos de la tierra
de esos versos que desmenuza Dios
yo vengo

WORDS FOR MY DEAD FRIEND

Tell me why your heart, like a diminished jungle,
Awaits under the earth for the unattainable birds.
Vicente Aleixandre

For Julio Daniel Chaparro (1962-1991)
Colombian journalist killed by crossed fire.

One voice to sing while asleep
A stanza over which to rest
the one that died too young
without poetry being able to
make a house to fit his heart

One voice that flows like a kiss of water
over the drying lips
of those who see death lurking
and feel tired
too tired
to at least try to throw it off with a gesture

Let this one stanza
Be the glinting knife that in the darkest night
Helps the weakest of men
Cross without danger
The alley of sadness:

One voice
The resonance of one voice
The one word of mankind
